St. Patrick’s Day was always a big day in my house, even bigger than Christmas. My Grandparents were from Ireland and we would spend the day cooking, singing and dancing. I knew how to do the Irish jig and clog before it was a competitive sport.I loved to listen to them talk about what it was like growing up in Ireland. Along with all the wonderful family stories I did learn a few fun facts…

You better sit down for this one. St. Patrick was not Irish! His dad was Italian, his mother was Scottish and he was born in Scotland. His birth name was Maewyn Succat. Who knew? And the whole chasing snakes out of Ireland? Just a legend. I cried when they told me that, I hate snakes.

Better book that church now. St. Patrick's Day is considered the luckiest day of the year to get married....Unless it is a Saturday. According to Irish superstition, Saturday is the worst day of the week to get married. As the proverb states "Marry on Monday for wealth - Tuesday for health - Wednesday the best day of all - Thursday for losses - Friday for crosses - Saturday for no luck at all." And what day do we normally have weddings….Saturday.

Four leaf clovers -- for your eyes only. Found a four leaf clover? You will now have good luck in gambling and racing and it will render witchcraft powerless! However, you must always carry it with you and never show it to others, or your luck will fail. I guess since mine is taped to my computer at work, where everyone can see, it explains my poor luck lately. Time to hide that thing in my purse.

Now here are a few facts about the four leaf clover:

The highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14!
There are about 10 000 regular three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf clover.
The legend is that each leaf of the clover has a meaning:  the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.

Now you are well informed and should go out and celebrate.  Just remember If you drink green beer leave your keys with the Leprechaun at the door. They will make sure you get home safe.

  22. Well, aren't you full of interesting information! Love it and definitely info I will share with my child.

I DID find a four leaf clover when I was younger and kept it for a long time but it has long disappeared...I'm sure it fell apart at some point and was thrown away.

  48. We covered St. Patrick in my British History class, he was actually enslaved by Irish people and later in life wanted to bring Christianity to the Irish. I have no idea how he got the name Patrick! Now we just use it as an excuse to drink, i doubt he would approve! LOL
